Tell Us About Your Close Calls

So, this morning on my way to work. As I was taking an exit onto a major freeway here in New Jersey, the lady in front of me slammed her brakes. Like a domino effect, I had to quickly grab mine causing my brakes to lock up and my bike to start drifting. Luckily, I let go of the brakes right away and managed to straighten up the bike to avoid a near disaster. Lets just say that the fact that I remained completely calm the whole time is what saved me from a catastrophe, but I'm positive that many others have had a nasty close call or scary moment.

If you have had an experience and managed to save your butt from it please share away.

Probably when I was lane splitting.. Went a little faster than I should have, should have slowed down with the traffic. Car onto left of me tried changing lanes to the right, I locked up the rear a bit, slid for a little and recovered. Nothing crazy. That was probably..2-3 weeks into riding? Definitely more cautious now.

Last Saturday, riding home from a meet and greet around 12am a giant bull frog decides to play frogger with his own lift. I nearly miss him from jumping right on my front wheel. Sucker came out of nowhere. Living in Texas where land changes from country to city within one block is very dangerous and have to keep your eyes open for everything. You might say oh just a frog, but have you seen a Texas bull frog. Them things get 10 to 12 pounds easy around here.

First week owning the bike I was riding it to my girlfriends house, and was waiting in a shared turning lane waiting for few cars and a pretty large truck (lorry for all you UK folk) to pass. There happened to be some bike riders riding side by side on a road that has no sidewalk and a narrow side, so the truck began to come right at me. I went to accelerate out of the shared turning lane and back into the main traveling lane but I stalled my bike. Because of lane positioning he missed me by a few feet, but I definitely took it upon myself to practice my quick starts after that..

I sell propane and propane accessories.

Locked up on rt 1 in the same exact way 3 or so years ago when I started. Just kept the rear locked and the bike was on a 45 degree angle to the lane by the time I stopped.

Last year, I was being an ass and was flying around a corner and hit a pot hole leaned over quite a bit. Front bounced into the air, landed and grabbed, and then I had one **** of a tank slapper, nearly throwing me off the bike. I was able to stand it up and straighten out but that was definitely the most scared I'd been on a bike so far.

Early this season I hit gravel leaving a corner and had the rear drift out, then catch, and had a good wobble or two out of that. I cut the throttle instead of rolling off and riding it out and it snapped hard when the rear did grab.

Also crashed the r3 on my home from the dealer about a month ago. I locked up the front and went down while doing some hard stops to break it in. I should have known better as the parking lot I was in is filled with sand/gravel and the tires were still too new. I'd done a bunch of riding and drills in that lot though, so I was a bit too confident.

Thats about it for my oh sh*t moments, I've had a ton of people merge into lanes in traffic and that kind of stuff, but they are very easily taken care of if you anticipate it. Outside of my first few weeks on the bike I haven't had a close call that I didn't cause by riding aggressively.

@cxa0897 Yeah my experience today happened coming out of rt 1 and going to 295. Def a nail bitter, but I was completely calm the whole time. It was crazy

The the first few weeks of riding, had to make a really quick stop on the freeway due to traffic stopping and slammed my foot on the rear break, locked up the rear tire and got the bike a bit sideways. Close call, but got myself out of it and learned my lesson.

Yeah... Once I get a new suit that isn't two sizes too small, that's the plan. I've been trying to get to a track since last year but things just haven't been working out.

That said, there will always be something sweet about carving up a mountain road

4 lane road, 2 oncoming other was vise versa. Speed limit posted is 50. I was speeding around a slow driver on the right lane using left lane to pass. The idiot lady was putting make up on. She started to swerve unknowingly, readjust and repeat. Eventually we both hit a red, both being first in line. She gas on the throttle and starts crusing side by side to me, next thing I know shes in my lane with my boot press against her window pushing me to oncoming traffic. Got her plates, flipped her the bird and exchanged some nasty words. Hopefully I dont run into her again and remember to pay attention to your surroundings. Ride safe!!!
