EDIT: Sorry meant to quote jbluetooth regarding the race spec light shock.
No mods necessary, this new one is an easy direct replacement. Same shock I run on my own race bike, the Race Spec. Lite

Cheers,
Jesse

Thanks for all the replies! Now time to convince my wife that I *need* something "critical to my safety" on my bike.

I’ve been researching Shock upgrade options for my R3. Listed below is a quick listing of pricing and features for the shocks I know of. I’m currently leaning toward the Ohlins because of the adjustability, look (love the reservoir mounting bracket), ease of resale appeal, and the fact that I have $35 in points at Webike Japan.

If I was being logical, I bet that Jesse’s Race spec lite would perform the best.

Have I missed any?
This is a nice summary listing! One thing not mentioned though is the WEIGHT of each shock. I suspect all of them are likely lighter weight than the cheap OEM shock, but I would really appreciate seeing some specific weights, since I am continuing my R3's weight reduction program, and one item on the checklist for each potential mod is weight.

Anyone got at least 1 or more of the weights?

Thank-you, Jesse! The Race Spec Lite shock is therefor 2.4 lb lighter than the OEM shock!

Yss mz366-280trl-

Firefox Racing out of England is a large YSS distributor suspension shop. They sell on Ebay and also sell on their facebook site. I paid $345 USD shipping included for my CRF230F YSS shock. Pricing varies pending daily exchange rates. Delivered Fedex US in 14 days. Pricing is more competitive than Asian suppliers.

Base model with Rebound

So... was there any consensus regarding the YSS for track only bike usage (besides the Ohlins/Penske/etc are best crowd)? I'm also looking for something that will just help me maneuver better on the track better than OEM that doesn't break the bank. I am also considering the Norton Motorsports Race spec lite.

For a race bike (and a track-day bike comes close), an important factor is what you can get local support for. If you need a revalve, who can do it in short order (and do they know what they are doing, or would they be stumbling through something unfamiliar to them). In my area ... that's Ohlins. At-track support is available on most race weekends.
