Change OEM body work cost?

7563 Views 20 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  RebelRayna
I've been holding out for a matte grey 2016 R3, but the dealer keeps telling me they have no idea when they are coming in, and that they haven't even been built yet, much less shipped to their store.

A red R3 just come in on a trade, so I could get a deal on it, since it is used. However Red is my least favorite of the 3 color options. How much would it cost to replace the body work on the thing? I'm thinking that maybe i'll ride it for a while, and if I drop it, i'll just replace them all with the color I wanted. Hahaha

Something tells me this would be ridiculously expensive though.

Have you checked the parts for sale board? Bodywork available there.
Check sites like this: http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/2015/YZFR3+-+YZFR3FB/parts.html

Gives you an idea of what OEM stuff will cost. Depending on what bits you want to replace, there's enough info out there that you should be able to figure out yourself what kind of money you can expect to spend.
Completely changing 8 colored panels is less then $400 total, brand new. You can have them for about $300 total if you are patient they always pop up when racers swap out for race bodies.

I check prices on 7 sites periodically and procaliber.com is still currently the cheapest for almost all parts.

Example: the main fairings in black are $130.00 shipped on procaliber and $150.00 shipped on partzilla (you have to pay shipping on partzilla orders under $149, procaliber orders over $99 ship free). If your partzilla order is over $149.00, the procaliber price is still $6.00 cheaper.

Plus, procaliber has 12 warehouses around the U.S. so orders arrive quickly.
I'm really amazed at how cheap this is. Thanks for all the info guys!

It's pretty awesome, the R3 replacement parts are really affordable. I think the fact that none of the bodywork is very large pieces probably helps keep costs way down.
But red is beautiful! :( haha I might want some of your fairings if you do end up swapping just so I can have some spares.. Have you looked into vinyl wrapping? Seems like it would be a pretty cheap alternative considering you just plan to do a matte grey.
interesting, fairings seem more expensive for blue than for red or black on both partzilla and procaliber. black looks like the cheapest. i'm interested to see where the grey falls when it's out

Through twists of fate, I ended up getting a Black bike. Though Woods Fun Center in Austin has yet to deliver the **** bike to me.

In hind site, I really do like the Red, and as it turns out, black seems to be my least favorite of the 3 colors offered in 2015.

I'll still be doing a color swap, but now that the red and blue have grown on me so much from seeing others around town, it is going to be a hard choice.

Also, in terms of vinyl wraps, I've done them myself on cars, and doing small pieces is a real pain in the ass. Most likely because I'm just not very practiced in it. Also as someone who is completely talentless in that department, it would be difficult for me to match the color design of the 2016 matte grey bike. Just doing one solid color would look boring to me. /shrug

I'm completely new to the bike scene, so interpreting the parts list is a little difficult for me. From what I have been able to find on partzilla, I've snagged anything with a color reference, including graphics and emblems.

See anything I'm missing?

Assuming I haven't missed any parts, that is incredibly cheap to do a full color swap.
Now if only I could decide on a color. :)

Its funny that this never occurred to me. I thought of color choice like a car where it's a pain to do a repaint, but on a bike like the R3, it really is as simple as swapping panels.

I guess that's a +1 in the "pros" column for having a neutral colored frame.

Agreed. I was holding out for a Matte Grey 2016, but then I realized that its just a few pieces of plastic and some clips. Luckily, the R3 has a bunch of really cheap pieces. Doing this on a more expensive bike would probably double or triple the cost.
You do not have to buy graphics if you buy the "Side covers (1) (2)" they come with graphics already attached.
Nice parts site! Just buy whatever "Covers" and you will be fine.

That's definitely one of the advantages of the gas tank cover on the R3. If you had to buy a whole new gas tank it would be significantly more expensive to change the colour.

Very Cool! Thanks for the foot work...

I pulled the trigger on all black panels to do some custom graphics on the bike. Just to let you know that these parts might be oversized and some of the online companies might charge extra. I got raped on shipping charges from yamahaparts.com because of the box they shipped it in and they shipped it without paying the extra charges. It might even be cheaper to your local shop and purchasing it through them.

Here's the color chart. The last number changes depending on the color.

The dealer should have it. That's crazy.

Im glad I came across this thread. I dropped my bike the second day and was looking at paint, but buying the fairing looks like it'd be cheaper.

Has anyone looked at the complete plastic kits available on E-Bay out of China? Fit, finish? Looking at the yellow and black. Sat on an anniversary R6. My hip hated trying for the rear brake. Saved me so money.
