I've owned both. I reckon the first gen looks better from a distance, but the second gen looks better when you're on the bike riding it.

2nd gen, the 2022 is my first bike ever so I'm attached to it. The look is more refined than the 1st gen. IMO

If I were to go strictly on appearance, I'd say the second generation.... That being said, I own both. For my uses (track use), the first generation is superior in EVERY way!!!! The bodywork is closer to the bike, which makes it "crash" better. The forks are easier/cheaper to upgrade- modify. Also, the tachometer is much easier to read at a glance, then the 2nd generation. Those items are pretty much all that changed "mechanically" between the two. Yamaha has a HUGE hit with the R3!!!! The things they upgraded in the second generation, were more geared toward appearance/marketing. I think Yamaha did a brilliant job of marketing the 2nd generation!!!! I still think they got it "right" the first time -
