I just synced my throttle bodies and I figured I’d share a bit on the process.

Background: A few months back I tried out Spears’ ported TB’s. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the bike tuned properly, so I switched back to my stock TB’s. My bike had been running a bit rough ever since. It was especially rough pre warm up.

Yesterday I synced the TB’s and the bike is now back to running flawlessly.

Here’s the procedure for checking and adjusting the TB synchronization from the service manual:

Instead of using Yamaha’s vacuum tool I used a motionpro “syncpro”. Here is a youtube video on how to use the device. The process is the same for TB’s and carbs:

Here’s where I was before sync:

And here is after:

Here’s a view of the TB vacuum ports and adjustment screws:

Overall this was a very easy process. Don’t be intimidated if you’ve never done it.

Thanks for this great posting, Chris12, and especially for the photos. On your MotionPro gage, how much vacuum does each marked line on the gage represent? I'm asking because your throttle bodies showed only about 1-1/2 marked lines difference between the 2. I am wondering if that is equivalent to mm of Mercury or cm of Mercury or ? (It does not look like Mercury in the tubes, so probably an environmentally safer substitute). It was apparently enough of an issue to encourage you to do the synching.

Knowing the answer could help us to know just how sensitive to synchronization the R3 engine is.

Also, how small does the "angled driver" need to be to get at the air screws?

On the 1970s and 1980s 2-stroke small displacement motorcycles I have owned over the years, carb synchronization was absolutely critical. Good synching not only made throttle repsonse way more precise, but it also made the exhaust sound more appealing!
