Larry's R3 Project Build

Hey everyone. Thought I would post pics of my new build. I happened to stumble across a pic of a bike some guy built in Japan and it looked so cool I decided to build one for myself. Then I found out it was a R25 which kind of bummed me out since I always thought of the R3 as strictly a beginner bike. But after reading how fun they could be with some mods I went ahead and sold my R6 I've been riding for 12 years and started looking for a used R3.

The plan was to replace the bodywork anyway so I started looking for one that's been down with cosmetic damage for cheap. I ended up finding a super clean '15 with only 750 miles for $2500. It had small hole and crack in the left fairing but that was it. Rode it 150 miles home. What a fun little bike. No where near an R6 powerwise but very nimble. Plus i'm only 135 lbs and 5'5 so it fits me great.

I've already stripped it down and got most of my parts in. Started with installing Vortex rearsets and clip ons last night. Once I get my wheels and a few brake adapter pieces back from the powder coater I'll start installing the new brakes and MC.

This forum has been very helpful when deciding if I should sell my bike to get an R3. Unfortunately the wife said there's only room in the garage for two bikes and my '82 Suzuki 1000 Katana isn't going anywhere :)

Quick update. My friend came down and worked on the body yesterday. Filling in some low spots, doing some fine tuning on the panel gaps. We should finish Monday then I will give vinyl wrapping a try. I ordered 5'x10' Avery Dennison Supreme satin in a light blue from Amazon. Figured it's worth trying myself for $100 worth of vinyl vs the guy near me that wanted $1000 to wrap my bike!!! I'm thinking with vinyl (if I am somewhat successful at it) I can always update the look of the bike if I start to get bored.

I also ordered a new tail section from AirTech down in Vista CA. I always thought the GGRetro tail looked a bit modern compared to their fairing so I am going to try to mount a TZ500 old school Yamaha race tail to the R3. They make them to order so it won't be ready for pickup for about 3 or 4 weeks. Hopefully I won't have to do too much fiberglass modding to make it fit. Will have to make mounting brackets and add a new taillight, license plate mount, and turn signals.

Greetings fellow R3 enthusiasts. I received my Chinese Akrapovic knockoff slip on exhaust. Took a little over a week from ordering on eBay. Quality seems good. Fitment is another issue. It comes in silver or black and they said they could make one without the 'laser etched' logo. I wanted to keep the stock muffler/catalytic converter box since I live in CA and I've been ticketed too many times for an exhaust system in the past. Just not worth spending a lot of money on an exhaust system. This was $112 including shipping. But I will have to do something about how it slips onto the stock pee shooter pipe from the muffler box. Huge gap and exhaust leak. And the stock gasket is too thick to fit inside the big split collar sitting inside the split muffler pipe. Maybe just wrap it with exhaust wrap. I did, however, buy an Akrapovic exhaust hanger so they did get some of my money :)

I also replaced the LED headlight for something more retro looking. New Cibie H4 light with a Hella yellow bulb.

Hopefully my bodywork gets finished tomorrow and I can start wrapping it. I did give the front fender a satin black wrap last night. It was a lot harder than it looks on YouTube videos! I ordered 3m Design Line knifeless tape and I plan on breaking up the wraps into separate sections on the parts where needed.

Amazing stuff so far bro, loving all the updates thank you. I'm in Carson, what city are you in? Would love to see this in person once it ready or sooner :) maybe even catch a ride together.
Hey DabbinDD. I'm next door in Harbor City. The bodywork is still being done. May get finished where I can start wrapping it at least with the base color by the end of the week. I'll start riding it then.

I wrapped the pipe the other day. Wrapped around and around the stock muffler pipe to make the diameter more or less even with the rest of the slip on. I also installed an R6 throttle for quicker response. What a difference!
Project update. The bodywork is done and I wrapped my first piece today (one of the easier panels). Definitely one of those skills where practice makes perfect. I'm hoping to get the base satin blue done by Sunday. Not sure if I'll ride it all blue for a while or spend more time to add the black and white Yamaha Racing Inter-color graphics right away.

Weekend update. Did the belly pan in satin black and spent a couple of hours doing the upper fairing. Getting close!

I also picked up the TZ500 tail. I'll probably wait until this winter to make it fit as I'll have to cut some stock brackets off the bike to make it work (if I can figure out how to use the stock seat with it). Don't want to add another two months of down time from this riding season.

Are you using a swing wrap? If so, how many mls thickness is it? Where did you get your wrap? Other colors available?

Thanks for the updates.

Not sure what a swing wrap is. Based on info I got from watching YouTube videos I bought Avery Dennison Supreme vinyl wrap from Amazon. I just looked at what colors were for sale and went with satin light blue but there are other colors available in the same brand.
I'm done with the basic vinyl wrapping now. The only thing left is to work on adding the black and white graphics. Will be using lots of 3M knifeless tape for that. I wrapped the tank cover in three pieces and the tail in three pieces as well.

Once I get the graphics done I will take better pics of the final product!

I'm interested in what headlight bracket you used.

It came with the body kit from GGRetrofitz.

Definitely one of the best project. Can't wait to see the final version.
I think I'm mostly done for now. Here are some pics.

Parts list:
-Agras radial caliper mount
-2015 GSX-R 750 OEM Brembo radial caliper
-Brembo RCS 15 radial master cylinder w/ remote reservoir
-OverRacing rear caliper mount
-Brembo 2 pot rear caliper
-Custom made Earls Speed Seal stainless brake lines
-Vortex clip ons
-OEM R6 throttle tube
-Rizoma bar end blinkers
-CRG LS bar end mirrors
-Vortex rear sets
-No name slip on exhaust
-Akrapovic exhaust hanger
-TST Industries captive chain adjuster w/ GP lifter
-Puig rear tire hugger/chain cover
-Cibie headlamp w/ Hella H4 amber bulb
-R&G front and rear axle sliders
-Gold powder coated stock rims (with new bearings)
-GG Retrofitz body kit
-Vinyl wrap (my first try!) Dennison Avery Supreme vinyl (satin light blue, satin black, satin white), Harbor Freight 20 yo heat gun, 3M Knifeless tape, and many sharp ass blades.

I still have the Yamaha TZ500 race tail to install. It looks like a lot more work than I thought it would be so once I start cutting things off the frame there's no going back. I'll provide updates once that gets going. I probably won't update the suspension till next year. I'm waaaaaay over budget as it is.
Lastly, I did get a chance to see/hear the Wicked Motorsports R3 with the Banshee 2 stroke motor (80+ hp) and talk to the owner of the shop. That motor swap is putting horrible ideas into my head for the future.

For some reason the site isn't letting me attach my pics like usual. It starts then the Upload Progress bar goes back to gray and the pic disappears.
Still can't post pics in this thread so I put the pictures in a Gallery photo album called 'Retro Style'.

Trying to insert pics here a different way.

Well that didn't work the way I expected.
I just bought the Spirit of '72 GG RF R3 in San Diego. Your installation of the TZ250 rear fairing inspired me. Kenny Roberts would be proud. You still own your R3? I'd love to ride up and see how you did it!
