New R3 Owner from Auckland, New Zealand

Hey everyone! Have just placed a deposit on my own Yamaha YZF-R3 in red, expecting to pay the balance and pick up tomorrow after work! Have lurked around for a bit doing some research on the bike so thought I should sign up now I've got one on the way

I'm living in Auckland, New Zealand for any fellow Kiwis on here. Currently ride a 1995 Kawasaki ZZR-250 which is a fantastic bike but I wanted something newer and much more attractive. I was tossing up the idea of getting a KTM RC 390 but I commute to work so thought the R3 much more sensible and also more conventionally styled - it'll probably age much better in appearance that way!

Anyway, happy to have signed up and looking forward to posting more often

Greetings from California!

I backpacked around your beautiful country for 2 weeks, a while back. You lucky devil, getting to live in one of the most jaw droppingly gorgeous corners of the world!

And now you get to enjoy it even more on your new toy. I'm sure you'll love it as much as all of us here on the forum.

Cheers guys! Picked her up during my lunch break today and riding back to the office felt quite... right. Shame about the break-in period but I guess that means plenty of riding in the meantime!

Probably not much need for another stock R3 photo but I've attached one anyway!

Hi there Another Aucklander here. Glad to know that you are enjoying your bike.

I recently downsized from an SV1000S. Before settling on the R3, I also tested a Ninja 300 and an RC390 but of those 3 the R3 was definitely the one for me.

I initially wanted the black colour scheme but finally settled on a blue one after deciding on a change - pretty much all my previous bikes have been black.

Anyway, welcome to the site. I hope that your R3 gives you years of enjoyment.

It was a toss up between just the RC 390 and R3 for me. I loved the more raw feel of the RC 390 but I think the R3 is just a much more well-rounded bike. It's not as flashy looking but the style is more classic, and I think it'll age much better than the RC 390's look.

I was the same in wanting a change from black too - my ZZR-250 was "midnight purple" or something, which was basically black!

Yeah. I told the KTM dealer "if I was buying a track day bike the RC390 would probably have been the one for me, but I'd hate to have to ride it to Wellington". My wrist and arse were sore after half an hour and I kept hitting the limiter due to the hard to read tacho and not being used to the bike. Finally the real killer was the 9.5 litre tank - I would have had to top up with gas every couple of days.

As you say, the R3 was definitely a more practical day to day choice.

Welcome to the community.

I did my due diligence with research before settling on the R3 for my first sports bike. I read nothing but outstanding reviews which surprised for a completely new model. However with Yamaha's R series history I shouldn't be surprised. Best review I found here http://www.amcn.com.au/reviews/road-tests/1508/2015-yamaha-yzf-r3-review/. Whenever I run into someone considering their first 300 class bike I give them this.

hey, also from auckland. looking at the r3 as my next bike to buy in the next 2 weeks. how does it ride? give me a full run down please and also would love to catch up for a ride when i get mine. would need to break it in as well.

I am about to pick my blue r3 "monster" within the next two days. First trip, breaking the motor in. Where? Heading to Auckland to pick up a 2nd helmet and to visit the Cnell shop for boots and draggin jeans.

Congratulations on your new bike. There's quite a few R3s in NZ now, which is great to see. I often see an R3 going the other way on Glenfield Road in the mornings.

R3 rider from out west Auckland here

Done a similar amount of k's as you, nearly up to 17,000 since March last year.
Was looking at going for a larger bike once I have my restricted, but pretty happy with the R3 for the odd track day and riding around SH16.
