Hi All,

Just want to check if your new R3 does the same thing.

I only got delivery of the bike last week. took it out for the 2nd time today and it didn't start up immediately. It cracked for a bit then started up and it happens even when the engine is warm. Also there is a burning smell =(

Thanks,

Do you ever touch the throttle while starting? (sometimes lack of throttle freeplay causes this)
or thumb the starter before the fuel pump has finished priming?

Also, don't touch the throttle until the engine has dropped to warm idle speed.
If it's brand new, there will be a burning smell for the first few hundred kilometers. Not sure why, new to motorbikes, but the dealership I got mine from said something about it.

Thanks for the response Auffit, i don't touch the throttle when starting. I just press the starter.
Also, how can I tell if the fuel pump has finished primming?

Sorry, im new to bikes and still learning =(

When you first turn the key, the bike will make a buzzing sound fr about 1-2 seconds. Thats the pump. I have heard of this before even on a different bike. On the 650 someone mentioned not starting it till it finished priming but I have never had a problem starting it that way, though I usually did let it finish since its only 1-2 seconds.

The R3 seems to struggle on startups when the bike is hot, as in, you just stopped, turned it off, and tried starting again. None of my previous bikes have ever had that problem.

Crazym3, Welcome to the site and congrats on your R3 purchase!

Please click the blue FAQ link below in my signature to find out more information on the R3 that you may not know and could possibly definitely benefit from some of the articles/posts/write-ups.

Here is a post that is in the FAQs about "Start up" on the R3

Hard starting
Mine does the same thing. Its normal. When the engine is hot the fuel can sometimes be effected making it harder to start. Lawnmowers can do the same thing. Ever tried starting a stubborn chainsaw that was hot? Same thing.
cold start - starts almost immediately
hot/warm start - 1-3 seconds of cranking

mine still has the burning smell once in awhile thou, currently at 4600km
