Reasons for slip on exhaust pipe

I keep hearing and seeing things about slip on exhaust rather than keeping the stock exhaust that came with it. What are some of the benefits of replacing the stock exhaust. Sound is obviously one but how about performance.

On other bikes you might get slightly more performance, but if you go through the reviews on some of them, most arent really getting much of a power increase. For me I would do it mainly for the weight loss. If I could get a full exhaust for less than $450ish (same price I paid for a full on a previous bike) on the R3 and it was claiming 4+hp gains and a 12+lbs weight loss, I would consider that a pretty good deal. This is after suspension work obviously.
