I am looking forward to trying to GPS the bike. My GF and I went out today with both bikes. We rode next to each other on the highway. we held steady on 60, 65, 70, and 75 mph. We stayed within 1 mph the whole time. That is the difference in a twitch in the wrist. neither lagged behind or pulled away. Our highway traffic is pretty solid 70-80 mph. no one was flying by us or passing us while we were in the 75-80 mph range. I don't think these bikes are reading more than a mph off. once we hit the 80-85. we where passing cars just fine. even a 5% reading error at 75 mph is noticeable in traffic. we don't disagree with speedos not being accurate. we are not sure how our two bikes are and can't wait to try some GPS type of test this weekend.
 
I don't think the speedo on new bikes is off as much and as often as people think. my two cents, if your speedo is off by a % or more than about 1-1.5 MPH. I would argue that is a defect and warrants servicing and/or replacement under warranty. We clocked two cars and two bikes with GPS apps on two different phones. Everything was within 1 mph of trying to hold steady. we ran the R3 down the highway at, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, and 85. It was spot on in each group and matched the CBR300R. My opinion, there is ore to a 115 - 120 mph R3 or Nina 300. My theory, sprocket changes without a speedo calibration. or tire diameter change without calibration. all things considering, sea level, humidity, heat, etc. I don't see that causing one R3 to run 115 and another 102, lol.... I don't think riding conditions can be that far apart.


any way, enough of my none sense. We are just happy we could say the R3 is spot on for the speedo. Now I can feel good about getting busted doing 100, lol....


An I agree with others, these bikes are fast enough as is. not like we have to have a 115 mph bike. 80-90 is pretty darn fast and not legal on our roads. the R3 is a bike bike. enjoy yours and ride safe.

I tried to argue with Yamaha about that when I had a problem with my Yamaha/Star Bolt's speedometer.
Yamaha told me flat-out that anything under 10 percent off, speedometer wise....not odometer wise, is considered normal and they would not do a da*m thing about it. Suzuki basically told me the same thing too. Hopefully, the R3 is way more accurate than my Star 1300 Deluxe. At an indicated 70 mph on my 1300's speedometer, my actual speed is 64 mph according to my Zumo 665 GPS but the odometer is almost spot-on.

The only bike that I've owned where the speedometer was almost dead accurate was my 2012 CBR 250. I remember reading an article in a motorcycle mag several years ago where they mentioned how accurate the CBR 250's speedometer was compared to the other 250's they tested
 
If top speed matters to you, try seeing how many RPM the bike does when it tops out, and try to get the bike rev in the power band at top speed.
quite often you can gain a few mph, by hitting the powerband correctly.

You can also tune it for upright seated top speed, or leaning forward.
I see no reason why the bike couldn't potentially do 105mph when leaning forward, and optimizing sprockets and few other things...

Upright seating, and I'd be surprised if it actually did 100mph...

Unfortunately, with sprockets you can only tune for top speed for either one of two riding positions, or somewhere in between.
The Honda Vt750 actually has its last 2 gears really close.
If you have less than 10% difference between 6th and 5th, you might be able to tune the bike to reach upright top speed in 5th, and ducked forward top speed in 6th.

wow that sucks. sorry to here that. I haven't used a gps on my other yamahas. this is our first time.
 
Just check your speed with gps on your phone, or a Tomtom or something like that. My speed is off just a couple of mph like the op said. My Zero, an American made bike is spot on from zero to 95 mph.
 
All Japanese manufacturers make the speedo read higher (they have their reasons). I think the largest obstacle to the top speed is the rev limiter (they don't want a new rider to trash the motor). I hit ninety in fifth gear, so I'm sure I could make it to 110 in sixth before the motor started to shut down.

They do it for liability reasons to make absolutely sure the speedometer doesn't read low. If it did they would end up with more lawsuits on their hands than they could handle, both time-wise and money-wise.

A low-reading speedo would cause people to get speeding tickets and could possibly cause accidents = Lawsuits.

If you ever hit the rev limiter at top speed, you probably need to regear the bike.
Usually +1t front could alleviate the issue, and improve top speed.
 
I finally took the R3 on the interstate this afternoon and I hit 103 on the speedometer before i had to slow down for traffic.
At that indicated 103, it was still pulling pretty good.
I'm 160 pounds and the winds were calm.
 
I got 109 mph last weekend. Sorry, on the highway, not a track. Ran outta room and going uphill. Din't check the tach. Was chasing my friend on a yzf 600r. Couldn't catch him...
...but 6th gear is reeeeeeeally long.

Acording to Cycle World Magazine, I thank that's where I read this, the average motorcycle spedometer is off by about 5 to 8 percent.
According to the Zumo 665 GPS on our 2013 V Star 1300 Deluxe, a speedometer indicated 70 mph is actually 64 mph.
Every Yamaha motorcycle I've owned has been off from anywhere to 6 to 10 percent.
I too passed by one of those "speeds gun things" on my R3 last week: It said I was going 50, but my speedometer showed 46 mph.
That's about 8 percent off.
 
187 kph = 116.196 mph

Don't know if the bike has any performance mods or if he has changed tire sizes or gearing but this definitely answers the question of R3 doing 115 MPH or not.......depending on how accurate his speedometer is. Could be off up to 8% or so, although mine is dead on up to 40 MPH and only 1-2 MPH off (reading high) from 60-80 MPH. I haven't taken it faster than that so far in the break-in phase.

I saw 187 km/h on his squid-view. That converts to 116.2 mph.
Kids, don't try that at home. Traffic looked pretty heavy for a high speed run...
 
My R3 really starts to struggle at about 90mph 109 is possible. I had to tuck so low behinf the wind screen to even have a chance of hitting 109mph.
